Hi Reader,
It's here! My interview with Janelle was so amazing. She immediately set the stage with this common scenario, that I've definitely been in often as a parent:
Imagine you're child is supposed to make their bed, or put away their clothes, or set the table...something they've done plenty of times, and now it seems like you're asking them to climb Mt. Everest.
They insist they can't. Maybe they don't have words and just knock stuff off the counter. You feel tired and low capacity and so as you think of changing the expectation, you doubt if it's to make your life easier. When our kids are struggling or "losing it" around our expectations, demands, or asks, we as parents are faced with high-stakes dilemma, Janelle says:
"You're afraid that if they learn they can act like this and get off the hook, they will manipulate you again...or they will do it to teachers, or a future employer and not be able to hold a job...and you also are confused. You've seen them do this before! And they are having an outsized response to the ask."
Janelle outlined ways to approach a situation like this, with questions to ask yourself and reflections so that you can feel more steady both in individual struggles but also with advocacy at school and in your child's extra-curriculars:
