Hi Reader,
Many environments by design can make it difficult for adults to see the whole child. There is often simply enough time built in, the expectations are too high, or the pressure is too great for performance to be prioritized. As a result, kids who come to play therapy may have been described by teachers, the community, or other adults as some of these labels:
oppositional
sensitive
anxious
inattentive
impulsive
difficult
This month I spoke with Real Work therapist Megan Gerry, Licensed Professional Counselor Associate, about how her career as a Montessori teacher set her up uniquely see how therapy can meet needs that school simply cannot.
“As I worked with families, it became clear that a lot of them felt lost at times with how to understand their children's behaviors and I was spending more and more time helping families navigate development as best I could outside of the classroom. I had a chance to work with a family therapist helping one of our children and really loved her warmth and the ways in which she took the systemic approach in providing support for them. I was left feeling drawn to what she did, that she was able to help families one-on-one with their unique struggles.”

Special Interest Groups are Back!
Fall 2026 Update:
Hi Wonderful families! It’s me, Gabi. I feel so filled with joy when I think about how far these groups have come. This past spring and summer, I introduced 2 new groups (Nintendo and Arts and Crafts) and changed the structure of the group for more consistent topics over a period of time. This change has been really successful! I’ve been able to see some of the same kids come back week after week, and start to form stronger friendships with one another over time.
I feel like these groups have confirmed what I already knew to be true - Neurodivergent kids thrive when they are able to connect with kids like them! I have seen kids develop and learn how to be in relationship with one another, navigate conflict, and initiate connection without having to be “taught” a certain way to do it. I feel so lucky to be able to witness this!
Our Nintendo group has been such a hit (and so much fun, for the grown ups as well as the kids) that we will be continuing that group through the fall and winter. I am swapping the Arts and Crafts group for a new topic, which will be Fantasy, Magic, and Fairytales! (Think kids who love princesses, dragons, fairy gardens, magic powers, etc.)
